Peace by Piece

Saturday in Shanghai. Monday in Madrid. Wednesday in Wales. You get around the globe some weeks.

shalomconcert

Your world music fix comes to you starting tonight, when the Shalom Peace Concert kicks off three days of live performances at the lounge-restaurant, Laidbackwaters by Shalom.

After the success of their CD The Missing Peace, the first-of-its-kind Shalom Peace Concert brings together six international artists, plus Indian favourites, to perform musical interpretations of peace.

A mix of chill-out lounge sounds new and old on keyboards, laptops, flutes and Sarangi, the next two nights will feature performances by J. Viewz from Israel, Vishal Vaid from the US, and local groups Karsh Kale, Jalebee, Ma Faiza, and Midival Punditz. They’ll join in a combined show for the grand finale on Saturday.

Exclusive invites went out to Laidbackwaters’ usual Page 3 crowd, who’ll be there to mingle and enjoy the quality food, drink, conversation and relaxing tunes.

Shalom plans to host this event once a year, and their second CD of global lounge hits is in the works.

So stop all that travelling, sit back and let the music wash over you.

Shalom Peace Concert runs November 30, December 1 and December 2 at 10 pm. Laidbackwaters by Shalom, The Qutab Hotel, Shaheed Jeet Singh Road, New Delhi.
Telephone: 9810048404, 9810148404.
Price: Cover charge includes unlimited food and drinks for Rs 1500 (Thursday and Friday nights) and Rs 2000 (Saturday night).

Spoilt for Choice

How do you decide on which shade of pink to polish your nails? Or which cell phone to buy? Or which parties to attend this weekend?

Sattva

If these decisions throw you into a tailspin, your eyes will grow wide from the many choices at Sattva, Saakshi Bhandari’s new store that’s quietly popped up in Khar. This charming boutique, done up in bamboo, bricks, and unusually-shaped lights, is full of clothing and accessories from upcoming designers on the verge of making it big.

Instead of pairing your tunics with jeans, try Ali’s striking patialas with dupattas, adorned with embroidery, mirrors and sequins. Or try Mirparti’s line-appliquéd skirts, dresses and tunics in a vibrant canvas, or Sandeep Biswas’s dresses that merge panels of different vegetable-dyed colours with atypical prints.

Sattva

Ali’s funky silver anklets with coloured zircons may strike your fancy. Sattva also carries jewellery by Stoned and Cheap Thrills, as well as refashioned kolhapuri chappals and colourful handbags.

There’s not a bad choice among these clothes, which can all be altered and delivered to your doorstep.

Just like when it comes to your nails – you can’t go wrong when you pick a pink.

Sattva, Flat no 11-13, Khar Punam CHSC, Junction of Rama Krishna Mishan Marg, Linking Rd, Plot no 67, Khar, Mumbai. Telephone: 26498446, 9833022210.
Price: Rs 750 to Rs 15,000.

Ethnic Chic

Look around. Most of what surrounds you is machine made – generic, mass produced and most likely owned by many others.

TribalRoute

If you crave the unique and lovingly handmade, chances are you will find it at Tribal Route. This brand new store houses carefully selected and handcrafted merchandise from artists and vendors across India.

You’ve probably never seen anything like Cinderella, The Princess, a white bust of a woman fashioned from stone ware. It’s one of the more expensive pieces, and a one-of-a-kind beauty.

Browse their full assortment of home décor items, art, artefacts and, best of all, fashion accessories, including embroidered shoes, embellished bags, and funky silver and terracotta jewellery. All priced cheaper than in most emporiums.

TribalRoute

The atmosphere is completely unlike a swanky store. Two 50-year-old cottages plonked in the middle of an open courtyard dotted with fruit trees. It’s the perfect place to unwind while you shop.

The owners soon plan to offer creative workshops at this inspirational hub.

May their tribe increase.

Tribal Route, 18 & 29 Aram Nagar 2, Jaiprakash (JP) Road, Machlimar, Versova, Andheri (W), Mumbai. Telephone: 9967058847 / 48.

Perfume Paradise

The whiff of coffee beans gets you moving every morning. The sniff of a wine’s bouquet starts your night off right. The smell of the right perfume stirs all your senses – and maybe someone else’s, too.

Deep musk and fresh floral breath beckon as you pass by the Fragrance Lounge. We at Trendylicious have had our noses out for this perfumery since it quietly launched a few months back. It’s worth a trip to the DLF Mega Mall in Gurgaon.

Scent shopping was never easier than from the neatly-marked shelves with over 75 international brands. Float from one section to the other, spraying on note after note of new and classic fragrances from Azzaro, Calvin Kline, Davidoff, Burberry, Gucci, YSL, you name it.

Get hard-to-find fragrances like Givenchy’s Amarige without travelling to Mumbai or Dubai – and without buying from the grey market.

While you’re at it, treat your nose to less-publicised scents from Lacoste, Mont Blanc, Tommy Hilfiger and Britney Spears.

You’re bound to find your aroma here. Happy spritzing!

Leonardo’s Lunch

Whatever happened to those car keys? Or that one missing sock that never came back from the laundry? And your favourite neighbourhood eatery that relocated?

DaVinci_bar_d

Trendylicious has cracked the code on this last mystery for you Bandra-ites. We discovered that Restaurant Da Vinci quietly opened its new digs a week and a half ago with an elegant, but casual look, big entertainment plans and the same Italian food you love.

The Fettucine Carbonara is creamy and crisp with bacon bits, and anathema for the cholesterol-wary. The Aubergine Parmiggiano is a paean to aubergines, and not for garlic haters.

Da Vinci Seating

Next week they start serving a decent selection of wines and beers. Their desserts are scrumptious – especially the chocolate ganache.

They’re open for lunch through the last dinner order at 12:30am. But the new place is small, so don’t go in a group of more than five or six.

On weekends a saxophonist plays or a live band belts out Sinatra classics. And Mambo Italiano night comes every other Wednesday, the only time when you can order pizza by the slice after 7:30pm and wash it down with some funky drinks.

While you’re waiting for that sock to turn up, you might want to drop in at Da Vinci. It won’t be your last supper there.

Da Vinci Restaurant, Opp Rupee Bank, 29th Road, Bandra West, Mumbai.
Telephone: 32486032 / 32486033.
Price: Dinner for two is approximately Rs 1000.

Play Date

You loved Casino Royale and Dhoom. Canned action keeps you on the edge of your seat, but you’re still craving some live action, aren’t you?

PrithviTheaterFest

Sanjna Kapoor’s Prithvi Theatre Festival comes to town this weekend. Six of the 28 plays staged at the annual Mumbai festival earlier this month will hit the stage at the Kamani Auditorium.

Kharaashein features National Film Award-winning actor Atul Kulkarni, and is a collage in Urdu of Gulzar’s poetic writings on communal riots. Mahadevbhai is a light piece in English based on the daily diary of Gandhi’s secretary. Shambukvadh comes from the prestigious Jana Natya Manch group, and is a satire in Hindi based on an episode from the Ramayan that will appeal to mythology lovers.

Also playing are Ramprahar & Malabh (in Marathi), Cotton 56, Polyester 84 (in Hindi), and Bhagavadajjukam (in Malayalam, English and Hindi).

As the Bard once said, the play is the thing.

Performances on December 2 and 3, at 11am, 3pm and 7pm. Kamani Auditorium, 1, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi. Telephone: 23386251.
Website: www.prithvitheatre.org/pvfestival2006.htm
Tickets for Rs 100 and Rs 75 are available at Kamani, Max Mueller Bhavan and The Music Shop (Khan Market).

Glow Getter

You hate to admit it, but your skin has seen better days. Just this morning, you spotted three new blemishes on your face.

Susan

We’ve all been there. That’s why Trendylicious tests new beauty products – before you splurge on a bottle, box or tube.

Our latest find? The new Almond Face Scrub from Susan’s Soaps & More. When style experts Yatan and Jojo brought this line from the US to India, we put our Trendy Tester on the case.

At first glance, this powder (made from oatmeal, cornmeal and almond essential oils) seemed a bit coarse. But then our tester added water and rubbed the paste over her wet face and neck. A rinse, and voila! Her skin was smooth, fragrant and well hydrated.

Susan’s Soaps & More products are made from 100 percent natural food-grade ingredients, so no need to worry about harsh or damaging chemicals. We’re itching to try the Mysterious solid perfume, Orange Vanilla body butter and Bay Rum shampoo and body soap.

With results this promising, just think of all the time you’ll save not worrying about your blemishes.

Susan’s Soaps & More, Mumbai: Intimmisso Organicaa, No-1, Pluto Building, Turner road, Bandra (West). Telephone: 56848422.
Delhi: Ravissant: 50-51, New Friends Colony.
Telephone: 26328648 / 49 / 50.
Price: Rs 775 for Almond Face Scrub, Rs 550 to Rs 1550 for other products.

Bring Home the Magic

You’ve always been the type who seeks adventure, craving excitement from the far-flung corners of the globe. That magic carpet has always been just out of reach.

ottati

Now you can bring the world home with you at Ottati Designs, a lifestyle store for furniture, accessories and objets d’art. This tasteful, well-stocked store transports you from Colonial India to Italian villas and the Imperial Far East. Owner Sonia Kumar trawls antique markets and catalogues to handpick every item.

ottati

Maybe you’ve been searching for a beautifully carved, hand-painted antique Chinese palanquin. Or maybe something smaller, like a traditional square-shaped Chettinad Chowki, detailed with delicate floral stained glass and tiles in vibrant shades of reds, blues and greens. Perhaps you’re more of a knick-knack type, scouring for antique crochet curtains, prints of famous paintings, Buddha busts, ethnic vases, or eclectic candle stands.

You’ll find exciting things each time you visit. No magic carpet necessary.

Ottati Designs, 9H, Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri(W), Mumbai. Telephone: 32922094.
Price: Rs 400 to Rs 3,00,000.

Room with a Hue

Dark, brooding lines zig-zag the canvas, defining the grief and struggle of humanity. If you know your art, you know we’re talking about the late celebrated Kolkata-based painter Nikhil Biswas.

Balartweb

Starting this Saturday night, treat yourself to his classic black-and-white drawings at the inaugural exhibit at Art Room, Delhi in Sainik Farms. Capitalising on Biswas’s posthumous fame, Art Room will display 20 of his works.

The exhibit, Creuset / Melting Pot, will also feature paintings by well-known masters Manu Parekh, Jamini Roy, Prakash Karmakar, Jai Zharotia, as well as noteworthy works by other young national talent.

Balartweb

Word on the street is that fashion designer Rohit Bal (a good friend of gallery owner Rashmi Agarwal) will be there to help kick off the festivities. Proceeds will support Kriti, a non-profit organisation for health, education, environment and women’s welfare.

Delight in the mind-blowing array of thoughts, colours and styles on canvas, all under one roof.

Creuset / Melting Pot runs from November 25 through December 12. Art Room, 119 Sainik Farms.
Telephone: 20253048 / 32462009. Admission is free.

Correction: The Yamaha Roxx concert we told you about in yesterday’s mail is this Saturday, November 25 at 5 pm.

Sound Garden

Something about the strains from that new blues place in Vasant Vihar stops you in your tracks. No banshee wail, no sad covers. Just a fresh new sound, full of youth and verve.

The Garden of Five Senses is quickly becoming the hotspot for all the happening events. Last week a ramp show, this week a concert with the newest boy bands on the block (and there’s girl in there, too.)

This Saturday night, set a date for the Yamaha Roxx Concert featuring eclectic bands including Level 9, Radius, Them Clones and Thermal and a Quarter. By day these artists are young students and professionals. By night they’re new rockers seeking fame, arena gigs and the ears of the growing Delhi fan base choosing Pop over traditional Punjabi music.

You might want to pick up tickets right away. 2,500 tickets sold don’t lie.

The best part? These artists say they hate singing covers, so no more long-haired boys caterwauling Smoke on the Water into the night.

Yamaha Roxx Concert, Saturday November 25 at 5pm, The Garden of Five Senses, Said-ul-Ajaib, Off: M.B. Road, (T-Point_CISF Camp) Near Saket, New Delhi.
Telephone: 26534401, 26510519.
Price: Rs 100.
