Swirl of the Orient

Mahjong's new wine hut

You were one of the first to team a kimono top with your Seven denims. And to embellish your French-rolled hair with jewelled chopsticks. Be a pioneer again. Pair your Oriental meal with Occidental wine.

Wine Hut at Mahjong

Mahjong has set up a wine hut bang in the centre of the restaurant. You can stroll up to it, view the domestic and
imported wines displayed on all four sides, and pick a wine that suits your plate and palate.

Pairing wine with Chinese cuisine, highly seasoned with vinegar, ginger, sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil and rice wine, is difficult. But not impossible. Ask the knowledgeable wait staff.

Sweeter, fruitier locally produced Zinfandels and Chenin Blancs go with most Chinese dishes, Muller-Thurgau Red German wine with spicy Szechwan fare, and Riesling with oily, flavourful Shanghai cuisine. Our Trendy Taster liked the way the slick yet slightly dense-on-the-tongue Italian Pinot Gris, with its faint outlines of spices like ginger, nutmeg and soothing vanilla, set off the zingy Chicken Black Pepper. Yin found its Yang.

Now, if only Zen were this easy to achieve.

Mahjong, Ramee Guestline, SV Road , Khar (W), Mumbai. Telephone: 26497788.
Price: Rs. 100 per glass for domestic wines, Rs. 175 per glass for imported.
