Where Galangal meets Ginseng

Thai-Chinese fare at VongWong

The Thai Pavilion may be closing for renovations soon. And foodie haven Ling’s is a trifle frayed around the edges for that really special date. Luckily, there’s a tony new place to get your fill of prawn dumplings and Pad Thai much closer home.

VongWong — named for its two master chefs — is the place eat right now. And not just because of its giant gold-and-black abacus, curtained private tables and high-ceilinged sense of space.

There’s the tempting wine list and cocktail menu (our Trendy Taster couldn’t get enough of her perfectly spiced Pear and Star Anise Martini). And the food, a happy mix of Thai, Sichuan and Cantonese yummies that lives up to the hype and leaves you spoilt for choice — 300 dishes and counting. You’ll like the lemongrass and galangal infused Tomyum Soup, love the delicately flavoured steamed red snapper and definitely go back for more of the Honey Roasted Pork.

The overall experience — elegant, eclectic and terribly addictive.

VongWong, 1st Floor, Express Towers, Nariman Point, Mumbai, Telephone: 22875633; Call ahead to reserve a table. Don’t wear that miniscule skirt if you plan to sit at the raised level bar.
Price: A meal for two with a drink each costs about Rs. 2,500.
