Tented Tremors

Dance theatre with a global message

When words meet verse, it ends in a poem. When music meets lyrics, Hugh Grant appears. When work meets play, it’s an offsite in Goa. And when deep political undertones meet talented Iranian women, it forms what Helena Waldman is known for: Pure dance theatre with a deep message.

Return to Sender

Choreographer-experimentalist Helena brings to Bangalore Return to Sender — Letters from Tentland, a two-part performance that makes no bones about its political baggage.

Six Iranian women enact their dreams and anger as they make a passionate plea for tolerance of cultural differences. Their tents whirl around the stage, symbolising the transient homes from which these exiles have no escape. They fold and unfold, ripping up like envelopes with letters tumbling out.

Watch mesmerized. Listen with your eyes. Soak in a message as powerful as the form.

Return to Sender — Letters from Tentland. September 7, 7.30 pm, Ranga Shankara, 36/2, 8th Cross, JP Nagar 2 nd phase, Bangalore. Tickets (priced at Rs 200), available at Ranga Shankara (tel: 26592777, 26494656), and Max Mueller Bhavan (tel: 25205305/ 06/ 07/ 08).
