The new Chatterjee & Lal art gallery

The MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London floored you with their sheer visual adventure. Luckily, now you don’t need to venture that far to feast your peepers on contemporary art.

Piyali Ghosh

Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai’s first new media gallery, opened late this summer. Elegantly artistic owners Tara (née Lal) and Mortimer Chatterjee have created a very ‘New York loft’ feel, with polished cement floors and stark walls offset by raw brick archways and exposed steel support columns.

Very cutting edge, says our Trendy Art Buff. And the works are, too. Installations and unusual media, ironic collections that fire up your imagination. And each month: a budding new artist, a new challenge for your artistic sensibilities.

The current show, unveiling tonight and open to the public tomorrow, is young Piyali Ghosh’s first solo outing. The painter’s explosive tempera on canvas work is a result of slowly simmered Bengali folk tales tempered with today’s urban angst. It finds the perfect foil in this avante garde gallery. And you’ve found a place where you can eye and buy art after your own heart.

You might just become an art junkie yet.
