Egg-less in Delhi

You’ve lost count of the times you’ve heard this one — I know you are vegetarian, but don’t tell me you don’t even eat eggs. Well, that’s what you are, and happily so. But often you get stuck with the thin edge of a nonexistent wedge of pie or pastry because they all, sigh, have eggs.

Egg-less desserts

Our Trendy Taster went searching for egg-less delights, and these four topped her list: Cookies at Mrs. Kaur’s Premium Cookies: Gobble the gorgeous Florentine or Cocoa Ginger ones, and doggy-bag the rest. As the line goes, no one can eat just one. Rs 35 a piece; 73 A Khan Market, and 29/6 East Patel Nagar. Telephone: 42480808/2345; www.mrskaurs.com.

Sorbets at Gelato Vittorio: Teeth-tinglingly delish and, oh joy, fat-free. Dig into the exotic Kiwi Sorbet and Wildberry Yoghurt. Indulge. Rs 170 for a half- litre. M 69, GK 1; Telephone: 32512527; www.gelatovittorio.com.

Blueberry cheesecake at Angels in My Kitchen: This cozy bakery dishes out the cheesiest cheesecake. Ever. Forget the calorie-count, it’s fruit, isn’t it? Rs 45 a piece. Defence Colony Market, and Shop no 9AB, New Friends Colony. Telephone: 51631239/40.

Banoffee pie at Big Chill: Banana and toffee melted together in a flaky piecrust. Top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Divine. Rs 90 for a slice; 68, Khan Market; Telephone: 41757588/99.

Just right for these Navratri days, when Delhi joins you in your pristine egg-less state.

We Are From Venus

You adore your polki set in elaborate gold, but that’s reserved for the pheras. For the cocktail evening, you’re looking for a contemporary-and-classic blend, to match your ultra-chic Sabyasaachi sari.

Flower Child Jewellery

Let Shaheen Abbas show you the light. Join the throng at her Flower Child jewellery booth at the on-going Bridal Asia exhibition, and admire the pieces from her latest collection, Vivacious Venus. Her fans include Mumbai’s telly goddesses Mona Singh and Rakshanda Khan, who snap up her pieces as fast as she can get them out.

Shaheen references timeless Mughal trinkets, modifying the designs with semi-precious gems and modern shapes, and sets everything in sterling silver. Our Trendy Vote goes to the evolved use of dulled-gold outlines, against iridescent stones: the contrast in textures heightens the beauty of both materials. Ear-rings are the signature pieces of the collection. Equally striking are the rings, necklets, bangles and bracelets, done up in fragile filigree, frosted gold finish, and glittering quartz, turquoise and pearls.

Perfect for trendy brides. And their maids.

Flower Child Jewellery, at Bridal Asia (On till Oct 18,) Ashok Hotel, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Tel: 26110101. Pieces from the Vivacious Venus collection cost between Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000.
Available all year at:

Net Gains

Experimental cinema is your thing. But your neighbourhood plex is busy running the latest blockbusters. On the off chance that a smart, offbeat movie does release in your town, it’s too far, too early, too late.

Wink

Now be where the film is, when you want. This month, participate in a truly edgy global cinematic experience daily, courtesy The International Museum of Women’s first-ever Imagining Ourselves Online Film Festival. Gather some of your I-like-different friends, uncork a fine wine, and settle down in front of your laptop to view original animations, features, documentaries, shorts, and music videos, all made by women.

Look out for these: Nefin Dinc’s I Named her Angel (Oct 22), a journey of a 12-year old Turkish girl learning to be a Whirling Dervish and Caroline Jules’s Paris-Dakar (Oct 29), a moving tale about prostitution in Paris. Superb Indian entries include Paromita Vohra’s poignant Where’s Sandra, a spirited take on stereotyped Christian women, through interviews with a girl called Sandra, who does, yes, live in Bandra.

Our Trendy Film Buff is happy to report that she faced no streaming problems. Like her, all you need is a broadband connection, and a 15-inch screen to turn your living room into a home theatre. And, if you miss any, simply visit the archives.

Log on, lean back. Watch.

Showing through Oct 31. Log on to: http://imaginingourselves.imow.org.

Alive

Head on over to Alive, where, as their tagline goes, delicious meets nutritious. VLCC’s new café with the sophistication of a sit-down restaurant, puts the fun back into healthy eating. Its zingy décor and trendy furniture makes it a vibrant, airy place to binge without counting each dreadful calorie.

It’s all about baking and grilling and roasting. Soups, starters, salads, a range of grills, both Indian and Continental, and a liberal use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, all done under the supervision of nutritionists. Start with the crackling Ginger Mint Cooler, and the succulent Basil Chicken Strips. Follow that up with either the Grilled Prawns in a creamy lemon sauce, or the Herbed Chicken Chops, marinated in fresh thyme. If you’re a green bean, opt for the Stuffed Vegetable Canneloni without even thinking.

And now for the best, most innovative feature on the menu: the Chocolate Risotto, made from Arborio rice, diet chocolate, low-fat butter and low -fat cream. Scrumptious.

Autumn Sonata

Black chiffon dress by Valentino. Sequinned dress by Alberta Ferreti. Dior cropped jacket, oh yes. A structured suit teamed with a bright shirt will complete your wardrobe for the season.

Escada-Delhi

Trendy brings you a scoop on the hottest design label to hit town, after it swept Mumbai. Walk into Escada at Hotel Shangri-La, when it opens next week. The spanking new store will showcase the 2007 pre-Fall and Autumn/Winter collection by the German label. Escada, a women-only clothier, creates easy to wear, yet ultra-glam lines. Its unique use of colour is its trademark. Unlike other brands that went black, grey and brown this season, Escada glories in bright pinks, greens, purples and golds.

During the preview, our Trendy Fashionista couldn’t take her eyes off the luscious pink trench coat with interesting buttons and thought it’d double up beautifully as a dress, too. Another stunner is the shimmering grey pinstripe suit with bright pink lining, superbly structured. Paired with a pink silk shirt, the combo is simply lust-worthy. Take your pick from a range of gorgeous evening dresses, jackets and suits. Accessorise them with strappy sandals and satin clutches or shiny leather bags to create a symphony of style.

Some things are pure music.

Escada, Hotel Shangri La, Ashoka Road, New Delhi. Tel: 011- 4119 1919. Prices range from Rs. 25,999 to Rs. 89, 999. Shop opens on October 25th.

The Theatre of Life

Role playing. Haven’t we done that before? Playing doctor and nurse as a kid. Customer and shopkeeper as an adult. Now fifty-year-old Ratna Pathak Shah is doing exactly that. She’s playing 16-year-old Antigone in the play of the same name later this month.

Ranga-Shankara

Part of the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival 2007, Antigone is one of nine plays showing, and will feature Ratna together with her husband Naseeruddin Shah. Adapted to present times, the story revolves around the plight of Antigone (Ratna) to give her brother, Polyneices, a proper burial against the decree of her rigid uncle, King Creon (Naseeruddin). How does this find resonance in our lives? It’s all about conflict management.

But first, you can catch Ram Ganesh Kamatham’s Crab, which runs in every direction. Rocky polishes a pair of boots. Jojo smokes. Priya is packing up. Zameil is climbing, wandering, searching. Three lives twisted in different directions because of a fourth.

Cause there’s a bit of drama in all of us.

Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival 2007, from October 20 to 28. (Crab opens on Oct 23; Antigone opens Oct 28). Two shows daily; 3.30 pm (Rs 70) and 7.30 pm (Rs 150). Tickets at Ranga Shankara (26493982), Sankars on Old Madras Bank Road (25586867), and Vodafone stores in Seshadripuram (41242122), Koramangala (41104164) and Indiranagar (41159477).

Freedom from the Known

They said you couldn’t travel to Ladakh alone, pair a skirt with leggings or paint your walls Cadbury purple. But Zenzi, the happening Bandra hotspot, has always supported your free-to-be spirit. No wonder, that it’s fabulous new 10-course tasting menu also challenges conventional culinary beliefs.

Zenzi

Combos that could’ve been born in your fertile imagination: Soothing honey with zesty wasabi. Hearty Italian risotto tempered with delicately sweet Japanese rice wine called mirin. Executive chef Shahaf Shabtay, Nobu-trained and globally-aware, applies his light hand expertly, drawing flavours and textures from diverse parts of the world and effortlessly putting them together into delightful pre-plated creations.

You’ll like the Saigon Roll, vegetables or prawn with diced avocado, served in a rice paper twist with an onion yakitori sauce. Our Trendy Taster was wowed by the dimsums — the veg comes as a tiny twosome of stuffed spinach rolls, while the Duck Gyoza is as subtle as a haiku. Two mains that are guaranteed to satisfy are the straight-off-the-cuff veg Phad Thai Noodles and the superlative Teriyaki-glazed salmon steak drizzled with sweet vanilla-mirin sauce.

With uninhibited creativity like this, even their just-launched Open Mind Nights, where anyone’s allowed to jump onstage to showcase a talent, seem tame in comparison.

Zenzi, 183, Waterfield Road , Bandra (W), Mumbai; Tel: 56430670; Prices for tasting menu plus a glass of wine: veg Rs 1,100 & non-veg Rs 1,350 (not inclusive of VAT).

Get. Set. Kappa!

Huff puff. Stretch. Kick. Crunch. Work up a sweat. Glow. Feel fit. Feel fine. But hey, when you’re working out, you sure look great. Clothes-wise, we mean.

Kappa

And if it’s at Kappa you shop, we know why. Kappa Italian sportswear has edgy wear designed to show off that toned body. Short shorts in soft fabrics and vibrant shades. Body-hugging workout tops. Comfy tracks cut short (and some even with tie-up bottoms). So pro, they’ve actually designed for the national rugby team (yes, we have one).

The Banda line has a band with the cool Kappa logo running the length of the piece. And EROI features tees with fun cheerleader messages.

And bags galore! Kappa excels in this division with some really retro-looking gym bags, and even casual everyday bags.

Shoes are sturdy and very design-led, but more for the neighbourhood gym than the next marathon. The stylish sandals are slender and come in delicate shades.

So, if you’re the sporty girl we think you are, we know where you’ll head next. (Sound of feet running).

Kappa, diagonally opposite Woodys on Commercial Street , Bangalore. Ph: 41239339. Clothes from Rs 399, footwear from Rs 499, bags from Rs 449.
