Booked and Hooked

In Living furniture, a click away
My new year resolution is all about sorting my books into ‘read’ and ‘unread’. Just looking at the tottering pile, I knew I needed a new bookcase. But the excesses of the year-end made me lazy. Shop-hop in search of a bookcase? That’s so not how I wanted to see out 2008.
Which is when a friend nudged me to my laptop and keyed in www.inliving.com. India’s first mail-order furniture catalogue company, In Living’s website was easy to navigate. Its living, dining, bedrooms and gardens sections confused me a bit — what does a bookcase come under? — but it’s also categorised by products. I clicked on ‘bookcase’ in the scroll-down list and was presented with seven options: asymmetrical, regular, back-boarded, super-narrow — it was all there.
While I waited for my mind to make itself up, I trawled the rest of the site: All their various styles have contemporary roots — think strong, clean lines — and, best of all, are made of solid wood, sheesham, oak, pine and fruitwood. I stopped by a Tuscan-style sideboard, dining chairs in sheesham and beds with generous headboards.
A little digging around and I learnt that In Living designs and supplies to Marks & Spencers and John Lewis in the UK. They have showrooms in Delhi and Bangalore, but they deliver anywhere in the country, absolutely free.
Ten days after placing my order with a credit card (they also accept debit and charge cards), the doorbell rang and there was my Tahoe bookcase. Now if only I could deal through my books with a click.
