Ritu Kumar's radical new bridal collection
There’s something in the air making me feel like getting dressed up to the nines. And going the Giorgio or Gucci way never feels quite as opulent as putting on the ethnics. So, what do I wear to that open-air shayari soiree or the wedding of the year? Obviously, something from Ritu Kumar.
And this season, my fave Delhi designer has outdone herself. Her bridal collection (yes, who needs pret when you want to feel haute, haute, haute?!) has blossomed into something that’s richer and yet younger than ever before. Much as I have, don’t you think?
Jewel-hued churidaars made of Benarasi brocade teamed with a free-flowing yet figure-hugging look in white and gold zardozi. Saris and lehengas inspired from Ahmednagar weaves, with made-to-order folksy patchwork cholis that complement the Paithanis perfectly. And while the range of velvet jackets in regal reds and majestic maroons gives a different silhouette to the classic bridal look, I’m thrilled to see Ritu experimenting with an unusual colour palette.
The hints of a star-studded midnight blue sky that peek out from a ghagra panel here, or the plush purple mixed with fuchsia or aqua there, aren’t the only departures from form. I absolutely loved the gold and net lehenga with brocade inlay as well as the cotton matte ensemble with yards of silver gota wire and motifs woven into its voluminous skirt, matched up with a white, khadi odhni. And for those of you who need wardrobe counselling, black is the new black, even at ‘auspicious’ Indian functions. Ritu’s clingy saris in glittering jet, smoky topaz and funky vegetable colours, paired with the interestingly constructed blouses are the ticket to P3 popularity.
Not that I’m interested in that. I just like playing the glam diva and Ritu helps me find my foil.
